Selling Hawaii's Big Island

Arts

The Big Island arts scene – both the visual and performing arts – is a vibrant one. Our natural beauty and spiritual ambience make it a magnet for painters, photographers and visual artists. Their work can be seen at the many private art galleries around the Island, especially in Kona and Hilo, Holualoa, Volcano, Hawi, Kapaau and at the Kohala Coast Resorts. Much of the work at these galleries is inspired by the Big Island, and in fact our wood products are among the most beautifully-crafted anywhere in the world.

The performing arts are also strong here, with lots of hula such as the annual Merrie Monarch festival in Hilo and the Moku O Keawe Festival in Waikoloa. Hawaiian music is showcased in ukulele and slack-key guitar events year-round. The East Hawaii Cultural Center in Hilo, the Volcano Art Center at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the Kahilu Theatre in Waimea all present a regular schedule of traditional and contemporary arts shows. The Big Island also hosts other music events, film festivals and special events at various locations throughout the year.
